Southend United 1, Rotherham United 1

Bilel Mohsni battles for the ball Bilel Mohsni battles for the ball

ROTHERHAM skipper Johnny Mullins bagged an injury time equaliser to deny Southend United a crucial victory at Roots Hall this afternoon.

Blues seemed set for all three points when Kevan Hurst thundered home a stunning long range shot in the 73rd minute of the match.

But, right at the death, Mullins bundled the ball home at the back post to secure a 1-1 draw for his side as Paul Sturrock’s troops moved six points away from a place in the play-offs.

Before the late drama, the two teams played out a reasonably uneventful first half during which Rotherham striker Daniel Nardiello had a close range header tipped over the crossbar by Southend goalkeeper Paul Smith.

At the other end of the field, Britt Assombalonga had a deflected low, left footed shot well saved by Millers goalkeeper Andy Warrington and the stop meant Blues have still not scored in the first half of a home league game since September.

However, Southend were on top at the start of the second half with both Assombalonga and Danny Mayor going close to opening the scoring.

But Blues made the breakthrough in stunning fashion when Mayor teed up Hurst and the midfielder blasted a 30 yard shot in to the roof of the net.

Rotherham responded well though and, two minutes from time, Mullins fired home at the back post after a goal mouth scramble inside the six yard box to ensure the visitors picked up a share of the spoils to frustrate Southend.

SUFC were AWFUL, defender Mohsni doesnt want to be here and played as a striker some good some not so good, Assombalonga 1 goal in 13 games and played out the games by good defenders for the last 3 months, Mayor anonymous. We had 3 strikers sat on the bench, goalie lets in another close in chance- not a goalie just a shot stopper - Sturrock not got a clue about substitutions or who is playing poorly!! Give Bentley, Corr, Eastwood and Harris a run out they know where the goal is - nothing to lose now. Cracking Hurst goal.

Moshni was man of the match today pity the other players couldn't follow suit.Let's be honest the players we have do not want promotion as they realise they would not cut it in League 1 and so they feel comfortable in League 2, hear on the grapevine we have Sturrock going end of the season and someone from WBA as the new manager?

Give Eastwood a decent run out in the team then at least we will know if he can still do it for us or not, Harris likewise.
Corr in and out cant do his confidence any good.
Last throw of the dice now.

Corr is the only decent striker at the club and Sturrock keeps him on the bench-What is his thinking? Sturrock needs to go as his tactics etc are costing the club and he nees to take the awful keeper with him- one or two good performances over a season is not good enough!

Corr, Freddy, and Harris all warming up in front of us while Mohsni and Britt are struggling? Odd decision to leave it so late before making any changes up front. Don't agree that Freddy /Harris on meal ticket......they need to play to show that they aren't. Give them a go from the off and see what they can do...you never know we might even score in the first half!

I agree smudghe65 - Gary 51 I think you will find that Harris could have stayed for one year at Millwall and got on as a sub in the Championship on 3 or 4 times what he gets here but wanted to do something for his home club - Seems like the manager will not give him and Freddy a go just because Ron Martin wanted them in not him. He would sooner have untried young loanees while dumping our own youth as well as ignoring Harris's and Freddy's experience and ability.

so the blame is on Martin? he provides the finance but not the expertise. Yes, I am amazed Sturrock dont start Corr, Harris and Eastwood, then take them off if they dont perform, the opposite to what he is doing now.

Eastwood is lazy & out of shape, he needs to show what he can do in the reserves. Watching the player warm up at half time looked like eastwood was more intrested in looking at the blue bells.
