PHIL Brown insists he is in no rush to add to his Southend United squad.

The Shrimpers boss has so far brought in just one new player, Myles Weston, this summer.

But Brown, who has missed out on several other transfer targets, is keen to take his time before bringing in more signings.

“We’re not going to rush in to things and make signings just for the sake of it because we have to make sure we get the right players for us,” said the Blues boss.

“I know other clubs, such as Shrewsbury, have already made 11 or 12 new signings but we certainly don’t need a major overhaul.

“We need to add one or two in certain positions, which we will, but there’s still a long way to go until the season starts and we already have a lot of good players here.

“We’re certainly still ahead of where we were at this time last season.”

Brown is keen to bolster his options at the heart of the back four and also in attack before the League Two campaign kicks off in August.

And he is currently weighing up his options in both areas of the pitch.

“We’re still going through our targets and getting things in line, just like a lot of clubs right now,” said Brown.

“We’re waiting to hear back on one or two and we could well be taking a couple of them out to Spain with us to have a closer look at.”

However, Brown has so far already missed out on moves for centre-back Jakub Sokolik, midfielder John-Joe O’Toole and striker Gavin Tomlin.

Sokolik, who ended last season on loan with the Shrimpers, opted to join Yeovil Town, O’Toole signed for Northampton Town while Tomlin joined League One side Crawley Town.
