SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown will continue to run the rule over the four trialists who featured in Saturday’s 5-0 win at Great Wakering Rovers.

Experienced former Hull City forward Craig Fagan and ex Tottenham Hotspur winger Roman-Michael Percil were both on target at Burroughs Park.

And they, along with defenders Jordan Wilson and Nabil Aslam will be staying with the Shrimpers this week for Brown to have a closer look at.

“The trialists can only beat what’s in front of them and that’s exactly what they did at Wakering but we need to have more of a look at them really,” said Brown.

“Craig showed one or two signs of having played at a higher level while Roman showed good pace, tenacity and an attitude towards running at people.

“They’re good qualities to have but we have a step up in standard coming up in our games this week and we will see how they get on.”

Right back Wilson, who had been playing in Canada, and centre back Aslam, formerly of Danish Premier League side AC Horsens, both played the first 45 minutes at the weekend.

But Brown is keen to see their defensive qualities tested further before deciding whether or not to offer the duo a deal.

“We asked Nabil to pass the ball which he did but he wasn’t tested defensively and nor was Jordan,” said Brown.

“We will have a look at them both again in training and maybe at Billericay as well tomorrow night."

“Nabir has played in the Danish Premier League so he could certainly be an interesting option for us.”

Brown is keen to strengthen his squad and has so far managed to make just two new signings this summer.

Myles Weston joined after being released by Gillingham while youngster Ellis Brown signed after leaving Charlton Athletic.

And Brown was thrilled to see them both get on the score-sheet in their first appearance for the club.

“Ellis is already surprising one or two people,” said Brown.

“It may be pre-season but he was up against two physical centre-backs who wanted to put their foot in and he stood up well to that.

“He linked well with Lee Barnard and Myles also showed great pace, quality and movement.

“He wants to play down the middle for us and he’s certainly staked a claim for that position with his display.”

Brown now wants to bring in more signings to strengthen his squad and he hopes to be able to complete more deals in the next seven days.

“I had a text message at half-time from someone doing his best to sign for us which is great to hear,” said Brown.

“It takes time but hopefully next week we will have one or two players through the doors. “
