BLUES boss Phil Brown has yet to decide whether or not to offer Ryan Auger a new deal.
The defender’s contract at the club expired last month.
But he has been invited back to the Shrimpers for pre-season and looked solid at left-back during the first half at Great Wakering Rovers.
“Ryan’s quality on the ball is there for all to see but his weakness is when the opposition have possession,” said Brown.
“We’ve been working on him with that and the penny is starting to drop.
“We will keep working with him, see how he gets on in the next couple of games and then make a decision on him.”
Auger came through the youth system at Roots Hall and made one senior appearance for the first team, at Newport County last season.
Brown also revealed that goalkeeper Luke Chambers who was also invited back to Blues for pre-season training is expected to go on trial to both Millwall and Cambridge United.
