DAVID Worrall has completed a switch to Southend United.

As was revealed in last Friday’s Echosport, the 24-year-old winger has opted to sign for the Shrimpers after being released by Rotherham United.

But Worrall, who has signed a two year deal at Roots Hall, has already endured an eventful start to his Blues career after being involved in a nasty car accident on his way to the club.

“I was driving down with my girlfriend and we were in the middle of a six car pile up on the M1,” said Worrall.

“I rang the gaffer and he had to send the chief scout to come and pick us up.

“My car got dragged off and I’m pretty sure it’s been written off so I’m now at a new club, looking for a new apartment and a new car so it’s certainly a fresh start for me.”

Worrall will line-up for the Shrimpers for the first time when they take on Charlton Athletic this weekend.

The winger will also train with his new squad ahead of the game.

And he is looking forward to lining up alongside the Blues players as opposed to clashing with them.

“The lads seem great but they have been reminding me that I normally argue with them all when I’ve played against them,” said Worrall.

“I remember having a few battles with Michael Timlin and trying to fight him on the way back to the changing room but we’re getting on so far so it’s all good and I am looking forward to settling in here.”

Worrall also attracted interest from clubs in League One, with Walsall, Crewe Alexandra, Notts County and Oldham Athletic all rumoured to have been interested in signing him.

However, Worrall plumped for the Shrimpers and was persuaded to do so by two of his close friends ex-Blues players Cameron Belford and Ryan Cresswell.

“I spoke to both Cam and Cressy and they said it would be a great move for me,” said Worrall.

“I know I’m dropping down a league but I’m doing so to join a team looking to get back up.

“I was persuaded to do so by the manager and by looking through the quality players in the squad.

“Getting promotion with Bury from this league is the best feeling I’ve ever had in football and now I want to experience it again with Southend.”

Worrall is keen to play a prominent part in that happening.

And he has been given a fitness programme by the Shrimpers staff to get himself back in to top shape.

“I haven’t really had much of a pre-season yet because I was training on my own really at Rotherham,” said Worrall.

“The plan is for me to play some part against Charlton, see where I’m at and go from there.

“But I always describe my game as being like a dog chasing after a ball so it’s obviously important I’m in the best shape I can be in for the first game of the season.”
