SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown will make changes to his starting line-up for the first time in League Two this season when the Shrimpers take on Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.

The Blues boss is keen to improve his side in front of goal as they look to bounce back at winning ways at Home Park.

And he will therefore be making some alterations to the team.

“I’ll be making one or two changes for sure,” confirmed Brown.

“Hopefully the changes that I make will add energy to the team and also a bit more quality in the final third which we have been lacking so far.”

The Shrimpers have failed to convert a number of chances in their last two outings which have seen them lose 1-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon and draw 1-1 at Carlisle United.

Brown is therefore hoping to see Blues bounce back against Plymouth.

And he is considering handing Jack Payne his first ever league start after the young midfielder scored twice for the development team in a 4-3 win against Oxford United on Wednesday.

“Jack is absolutely in my thinking for tomorrow,” said Brown.

“I think we’ve gone past the stage of having to find a system that suits him and he could fit quite nicely in a number of roles in our team.

“He could play in a midfield three or four, he could play behind the front man too and it will would be nice to get him in the team soon because I think he’ll score goals.

“If he does that then he will stay in the side and it’s now just a matter of when he’s going to start.”

David Worrall and Lee Barnard are also pushing for recalls, along with midfielder Will Atkinson.

And Brown wants Blues to make the most of a pitch he feels should them at Home Park.

“It’s an excellent surface and it’s a massive pitch too which we need to use to our advantage,” said Brown.

“Starting well is very important and we need to try getting in front and make our opposition chase the ball.

“Possession will be key and so will our finishing in front of goal.”

Blues head in to the game sitting eighth in the early League Two standings with seven points from their first four games.

Plymouth are 14th with four points.
