JACK Payne is hoping his goalscoring heroics at AFC Wimbledon can be enough to keep him in Southend United’s starting line-up.

The 19-year-old midfielder bagged both of Blues’ goals in the 2-2 draw against the Dons on Tuesday night before the home-side triumphed on penalties.

But Payne now also wants to be given the chance to impress against Oxford United this weekend and get the Shrimpers back to winning ways.

“Hopefully I’ll get more chances now and can stay in the side,” said Payne.

“It’s been frustrating for me because I want to be playing and I think I’ve been doing well.

“It’s annoying but I know we have a good manager who makes decisions for a reason.

“It’s up to him what happens next but I want to keep playing and keep on scoring too.”

Payne opened the scoring at the Kingsmeadow Stadium with his first ever effort in senior football, firing home from a neat, left footed finish from close range.

He then added a second just after the break with an impressive long range effort with his right foot.

And he was delighted to have opened his account for the Shrimpers.

“I haven’t played loads so it was good to get a start and score an early goal,” said the youngster.

“I enjoyed the game and my second goal but we should’ve won after that.

“It didn’t go to plan but it was good for me on a personal note.”

However, Payne also admitted that his evening had been ruined by Blues crashing out of the competition after losing 4-2 on penalties.

“It was gutting when their goal went in at the end to make it level again because my goals definitely don’t mean as much without the win,” said Payne, who netted Blues’ first penalty in the shoot-out.

“They were taking good penalties and it was gutting not to go through to the next round.”
