PHIL Brown was delighted to see two of his strikers hit the back of the net in Saturday’s win against Portsmouth.

Barry Corr and Shaq Coulthirst both bagged their first goals of the season to help the Shrimpers triumph 2-0.

And Brown was pleased to see them hit the back of the net.

“Shaq has had chances in every game he’s had and you could see the relief on his face when he scored,” said Brown.

“He came on with about 85 minutes on the clock, I told him he would still have a chance and he took it.

“That could kick start his career, let alone his time here.”

Coulthirst’s goal came after Corr had earlier headed Blues in front and Brown is certain the Irishman will now be keen to hit the back of the net on a more regular basis.

“Barry’s off the mark now too which is great news,” said Brown.

“He was top goalscorer last season and he will want to be top goalscorer this season too.”

Corr’s goal was just the third the Shrimpers had scored from a crossed set piece delivery in their last 27 games.

And Brown is now demanding more goals from dead ball situations.

“We have to score more from set pieces if we are to be a threat this season,” said the Blues boss.

“We tried a few different things in training with them and it seemed to work.

“The first chance fell to Jerome (Binnom-Williams) and Adam Thompson looked a threat too. “ But Brown believes bravery will be needed to get on the end of any future free-kicks and corners which he feels have always been of a good standard.

“The quality of the ball in was no different to the last 26 or 27 games because they’ve been quality throughout,” said Brown.

“We just haven’t got on the end of it before.

“It’s not bad luck because you need that commitment and desire.

“You might get a cut eye but if that’s what it takes to win a game then so be it.”
