ADAM Thompson started his birthday celebrations early by helping Southend United see off Shrewsbury Town 1-0 at Roots Hall.

The centre-back turned 22 on Sunday.

And a third clean third in four games, along with another three points against the Shrews made it a weekend to remember for the in-form Thompson.

“It's a massive win for us,” said the defender.

“We had a great week last week, winning three out of three and we had to make sure we kept up that momentum and we have.

“It was great to get the clean sheet. We had two before we went to York last weekend and now we’ve got a third in four games.

“It’s certainly a nice way to celebrate my birthday.”

However, Thompson and his fellow defenders were forced to dig deep for quite some time to secure their latest triumph.

For Shaq Coulthirst’s winning goal came after just two minutes.

And Blues were also not at their best.

“It was a long old time to hold on to the lead and defend it against a very good side but we were able to do it,” said Thompson.

“We didn't play our best but we scrapped out the win.

The fans saw it and there are times when, for one reason or another, we just don't get our mojo.

“However, we’re really pleased to have won.

“The gaffer has a good squad and although it's taken a few games to gel, we're on the same wavelength now.”
