SOUTHEND United midfielder Michael Timlin labelled his return to action as ‘bitter-sweet’ against Exeter City on Saturday.

The 29-year-old was thrilled to be back in action for the first time this term after recovering from the dislocated elbow he suffered during pre-season.

But he was disappointed that the Shrimpers were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Roots Hall after a disappointing second half display.

“It’s bitter sweet for me if I’m honest,” said Timlin.

“I’m obviously delighted to be back and to also be back in the team straight away but I’m disappointed we haven’t been able to get the result we wanted, especially as we were in front for so long.”

Blues impressed in the first half and took the lead in the 33rd minute when David Worrall headed home from close range.

But Exeter hit back after the break and secured a deserved share of the spoils 13 minutes from time when Graham Cummins fired past Daniel Bentley.

The draw, which extended Southend’s winless streak to three games, sent them down to eighth in the League Two table.

And Timlin felt it was a game of two contrasting halves.

“We did well in the first half but tailed off a little bit in the second,” said the midfielder.

“We allowed them to get back in the game and they took a chance that came their way.

“We felt it was a sloppy error from ourselves that allowed that to happen but credit to Exeter because they did well in the second half.

“They kept playing, almost over-playing at times, but it was frustrating we couldn’t hold out.”

Timlin produced a steady performance in the centre of the park and was pleased to last 89 minutes on his return.

The former Swindon Town man had played in just a development game, at Ipswich Town, before facing the Grecians.

And he was pleased to spend so long on the pitch.

“I’m glad I was able to get near enough the full 90 minutes,” said Timlin.

“I’ve done it in the past and I’ve just always managed to look after myself.

“I do work hard when I’m injured and I’m probably a pest for Ben (Clarkson) the physio and the gaffer as well because as soon as I’m fit I’m pushing to be back involved.”

Timlin will now be hoping to keep his place in the side for tomorrow night’s trip to Newport County and he insists he will be fit enough to start for the second time in the space of four days.

“In my mind I’m not concerned about how I will recover from playing because I’m back to normal now,” said Timlin.

“There are no problems with my elbow or my fitness so there’s nothing to worry about.

“I’m just looking forward to Tuesday and trying to get the three points against Newport.”
