SOUTHEND United centre-back Dan Matsuzaka wants to finish a whirlwind fortnight with victory against his home-town club, Barnet, in the FA Youth Cup tonight.

The 17-year-old defender joined Ryman One North leaders Harlow Town on loan and helped them beat title rivals Needham Market 2-1 on his debut.

After that, Matsuzaka was selected among the substitutes for the Shrimpers’ first team clash with Hartlepool United on Saturday.

And he is now raring to go for this evening’s second round clash against the Bees at Roots Hall.

“It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me but I’ve been buzzing about it and I will be if we beat Barnet tonight too,” said Matsuzaka who was with Crystal Palace before joining Blues two seasons ago.

“I actually live in Barnet and know a few of their players so that adds something to the game and it’s one we’re all really looking forward to.”

Barnet head in to the tie top of the table having won 12 of their 16 league games so far this season.

The Shrimpers sit eighth, 16 points behind, having played a game less than their rivals.

But Matsuzaka is convinced Ricky Duncan’s side have what it takes to come out on top.

“When we played Barnet in the league we were on top for most of the game and went 2-0 before they came back to get a draw,” said the defender.

“We can definitely take something from that game though and we’re definitely all ready for this match against them too.”

Matsuzaka will be looking to help the Shrimpers set up a third round tie against Middlesbrough at Roots Hall.

And, long term, he wants to figure for the first team on a more consistent basis.

“Being involved at the weekend gave me a taste for it and I was so excited to be a part of it,” said Matsuzaka.

“Getting the win made it even better and of course the aim is to be part of that all the time.

“There’s a lot of hard work to be done but my long term ambition is to play for the first team here.”

Tonight’s game kicks off at 7.30pm with ticket prices set at £3 adults and £1 concessions.
