SOUTHEND United youth team chief Ricky Duncan is expecting an entertaining and even encounter against Barnet at Roots Hall tonight.

The Bees have been beaten just twice in their 16 league games so far this season.

But Duncan is certain the Shrimpers have the talent to see them off.

“Barnet are a very good side who I rate very highly but if we play to our potential than we can beat them,” said Duncan.

“They’ve have category two status for a season and a half now and they’re reaping the rewards of that now.

“They have some excellent young players but so do we.

“When we played them before this season we went two goals up before they came back to get the draw.

“We need to start the game like that again but not let them get back in to it.”

And Duncan, whose side have no injuries or suspensions, has also urged the Shrimpers’ youngsters to make the most of the opportunity.

“For some young players the FA Youth Cup is the closest they get to experiencing first team football and there’s a real buzz around the competition,” said Duncan.

“We obviously want as many of our players as possible to progress and this a good chance for them to impress.”

The tie must be settled tonight and will go to extra time and penalties if required.

The winners will host Middlesbrough, who are coached by former Southend midfielder Mark Tinkler, in the third round.
