KEVAN Hurst feels Southend United are on the brink of producing something special ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Tranmere Rovers.

Hurst returned to the Shrimpers’ starting line-up for last weekend’s 1-0 win against Hartlepool United.

And the 29-year-old winger believes Blues are now close to hitting top form.

“I really do get the feeling something special is coming,” said Hurst.

“I think we can start scoring a lot of goals because the chances have been there and I believe something positive is about to come from the team and from myself as well.”

Seventh placed Blues have triumphed in their last two league games and Hurst was delighted to play a part in seeing off the Monkeyhangers.

The winger had previously endured five successive games on the substitutes’ bench for the first time since signing for the Shrimpers in 2012.

And, although he may not have yet reached the high standards he set last season, Hurst still feels he is contributing to the team.

“I’m still creating chances,” insisted Hurst, who bagged 12 goals last term and had more assists than any other League Two player.

“Maybe I’m not matching the stats I got last year but I’m working as hard as possible and I’m not putting too much pressure on myself.

“When you achieve what I did last year then expectation levels suddenly go through the roof.

“Sometimes if you don’t reach those levels again then you might be seen to be having a poor season.

“But I’m just focusing on what I need to do to help the team win because that’s the most important thing. “

Hurst is therefore eager to triumph at Prenton Park this weekend and heap more misery on a Tranmere side who sit second from bottom in the standings.

Rovers have won just twice in their last 15 outings.

But Hurst is taking nothing for granted.

“Tranmere aren’t doing too well at the moment but they will be fighting for their lives against us,” said the winger.

“We can’t afford to take our foot off the pedal but the lads all feel good ahead of the game and there’s a positive feeling around the place.

“Long may that continue.”
