PHIL Brown has expressed his delight at finally being able to bring John-Joe O’Toole to Southend United.

Brown, who had failed in two previous swoops for the attacking midfielder, has brought the 26-year-old in from Northampton Town until January.

And Brown believes O’Toole will be a big asset for Blues.

“That loan is with a view to a permanent deal and it’s great to finally get him to the football club after failing twice in the past,” said Brown.

“Being honest we couldn’t really compete with his wages before but we’re in a stronger position financially now and I’m really pleased that I’m going to be able to work with him at last because I think he’s a big talent.”

O’Toole will go straight in to the squad for Saturday’s clash with Northampton who have given him permission to play against them.

And Gary Deegan will also be in the squad after signing a new deal which will keep him with the Shrimpers until January.

Deegan’s initial three month deal expired after Saturday’s 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers.

But he has now agreed a new deal, much to the delight of Brown.

“Gary’s done well for us and I’m really pleased he’s staying,” added the Blues boss.
