SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown felt his side’s 0-0 draw against Burton Albion was a great advert for League Two football.

The goalless stalemate at Roots Hall was short of goalscoring chances.

But Brown was still impressed by the quality of the game.

“I thought it was a good advert for League Two football with two tactically aware managers going up against each other,” said Brown.

“We went toe to toe and both teams will be at the right end of the table at the end of the season.”

The draw moved Blues back up to sixth in the League Two standings, two places lower than Burton who beat Southend in the semi-final of the play-offs last season.

And Brown was delighted to secure a clean sheet after his side had conceded four goals in their previous outing against Wycombe Wanderers.

“I’m so happy that we were able to stop them scoring, especially after what happened at Wycombe,” said the Blues boss.

“Last weekend was very uncharacteristic from our point of view but we were back doing what we do best again here.

“We showed resolve, organisation and discipline and I was delighted by how we played from a defensive point of view.”

But, at the other end of the field, Brown was slightly concerned by Blues’ play as they never looked like hitting the back of the net against their well drilled opponents.

“In attack, I didn’t think we had that cutting edge we needed to win the game if I’m honest,” said the former Hull City chief.

“We had one or two odd chances come along but maybe they went to the wrong people.

“Myles Weston is suffering a little bit with his confidence at the moment but I think this is a good point against a good team and it wasn’t for the want of trying that we didn’t get the three points. “
