SOUTHEND United legend Kevin Maher is backing Jason Williams to shine on his return to the Shrimpers.

The young striker has been recalled from a successful loan stint at Conference South side Chelmsford City, where Maher is now head coach.

And Maher, Blues’ most successful ever captain, believes Williams – who will go straight in to Southend’s squad for the Boxing Day clash at Cambridge - is now capable of making an impression for Phil Brown’s first team.

“Jason did really well for us during his loan spell here and I would love to see him go and do the same for Southend now,” said Maher, who made 454 appearances during 10 seasons at Roots Hall.

“The longer the month went on you could see that his confidence has really grown through playing regularly.

“He’s a strong lad, with a bit of pace and an eye for goal and I’m sure if he plays or is involved that he definitely won’t let anyone down.”

Williams bagged six goals in eight games while with the Clarets and will now be hoping to find that form for the Shrimpers who have struggled to hit the back of the net on a consistent basis this season.

Blues have bagged just 22 goals in their 21 league games and manager Brown felt Williams could be use to the club during the festive period.

“We’ve decided to bring Jason back in because we felt as though we will need him during the busy Christmas period,” said Brown.

“We have one or two knocks and players who are injury doubts for the game at Cambridge so we’re going to be tested where that’s concerned.

“Jason has done well during his time at Chelmsford. It’s done him the power of good and he will be travelling with the squad to Cambridge.”

Blues, who head in to Friday’s game in sixth place, have also called back young centre back Dan Matsuzaka from his loan spell at Ryman One North high-flyers Harlow Town.
