SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has revealed both Gary Deegan and Jerome Binnom-Williams are close to extending their spells with the Shrimpers.

Deegan’s short term deal expires after tomorrow’s trip to Oxford United while Binnom-Williams’ loan spell from Crystal Palace finishes at the end of the month.

But Brown has now talks with both players and is confident of keeping them at Roots Hall for longer.

“I’m fairly hopeful that both of these players will be staying with us now,” said the Blues boss.

“Where Jerome is concerned I’m hoping there will be positive news soon and we could maybe even announce something before the Oxford game.

“We’re very close to finalising the talks surrounding his future and that’s good news as far as I’m concerned.

“I thought last week was a real eye-opener with Jerome. Due to the suspensions we suffered he ended up at centre-back against Plymouth and he did very well.

“He manhandled Reuben Reid, which not many defenders do at this level, and he showed that extra string to his bow which made me even more determined to want to keep him.”

Binnom-Williams, who has featured more regularly at left-back for Blues, has made 14 appearances since signing from the Eagles in September.

Central midfielder Deegan has played 15 games and returned to the starting line-up against Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

He is also in talks with Brown and looks set to commit his future to the club.

“Fingers crossed the situation with Gary is reaching a climax as well,” confirmed the Shrimpers boss.

“The deal would be until the end of the season and possibly beyond. “
