DAVID Worrall insists Southend United have to crack their home form if they are to achieve promotion this season.

The Shrimpers currently boast the best away record in League Two but have triumphed just five times in 13 outings at Roots Hall.

And Worrall is desperate to put that right, starting with Saturday’s clash with York City.

“If we can crack our home form then we’re in with a really great chance of promotion in my opinion,” said the 24-year-old winger.

“We’ve drawn the last three at home without scoring a goal but in the last couple of games, albeit away, we seem to have sorted things out going forward.

“Hopefully we can now go and do the same against York because that would put us in a great position.”

Blues, who sit fifth in the standings, will also be looking to build on last weekend’s 2-1 win at Portsmouth.

And Worrall is certain the Shrimpers will again be pushing more men forward.

“We had been playing with two players holding in midfield but the defence has been so good we can now play with one and get more men in attack,” said the winger.

“We had been working hard in training on Ryan Leonard getting in to the box so it was nice to see him score.”

Worrall set up Leonard’s equalising goal before also teeing up Joe Pigott for the winner.

That also continued the winger’s run of fine form, which he believes has been the most consistent of his career.

“In the past I’ve had good spells and bad spells and been in and out of form but I’ve been playing well for a while now,” said Worrall.

“I’ve been really pleased with how it’s been going and I obviously want to keep it going.”

Worrall’s performances have made him a favourite with the Shrimpers’ fans.

And he was left overwhelmed by the level of support Southend received at Fratton Park, with more than 1,200 Blues fans in attendance.

“I had never seen away support quite like that before,” said Worrall.

“It was quite a long way to travel and I had certainly never played in front of away fans like that in my career.

“They were making non-stop noise and, at the end everyone was going crazy, it was brilliant.”

However, Worrall also returned back home slightly miffed after being involved in an incident, he refused to elaborate on, with Portsmouth’s Paul McCallum in the dying seconds of the game, which led to the striker getting sent off.

“It was an off the ball incident but I don’t really want to go in to what happened and what he did,” said Worrall.

“It’s up to Portsmouth to decide what they do with him but I was disappointed not to get an apology from him.”
