SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has told his out of favour players to force their way back in to his plans by impressing at Canvey Island tonight.

The Shrimpers boss has selected a strong side for this evening’s friendly at the Prospects Stadium.

And Brown insists they must play well if they are to be considered for Saturday’s clash at Stevenage.

“After losing to Accrington at the weekend maybe it’s time to freshen things up and this is a good opportunity to these players to impress,” said Brown.

“They have been disappointed not to be playing but if they do well against Canvey then they will definitely be in my thinking for the game with Stevenage which we need to bounce back in.”

Brown revealed goalkeeper Paul Smith would start against the Ryman Premier League side, with Cian Bolger, Luke Prosser and Adam Barrett all lining up in defence.

Kevan Hurst, Gary Deegan and Myles Weston have been selected in midfield along with American exchange player Tristan Heath.

Further forward, Barry Corr, who scored after coming off the bench against Accrington at the weekend, will get a run out along with Shaq Coulthirst.

Lee Barnard could also feature if he shakes off a neck problem but Ellis Brown is on standby to replace the former Tottenham Hotspur trainee if he fails to recover.

“Hopefully Barney will be OK to play because he needs a game but we will have to wait and see how he is,” said Brown.

“Ellis is on a youth loan with East Thurrock which means he can still play in matches for us and he will start if Barney can’t make it.

“But I’m viewing this as an important game in preparation for Stevenage.

“We will need men at the weekend and some experienced heads so we’ll see who puts their hands up to be selected with a good display tonight.”

This evening’s match kicks off at 7.30pm.

Ticket prices have been set at £5 adults, £3 concessions and £1 for supporters aged 16 and under.
