SOUTHEND United surged back to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph against Carlisle at Roots Hall on Saturday, thanks to the luck of the Irish.

Former Republic of Ireland under 21 international Michael Timlin fired the Shrimpers in front with a fantastic volley before Wicklow’s Barry Corr completed the scoring to send Phil Brown’s side back to within three points of the automatic promotion places.

But fifth placed Blues seemed fortunate not to give away a penalty when 1-0 ahead when goalkeeper Ted Smith seemed to make contact with Cumbrians’ midfielder Steven Rigg inside the box.

And Corr admitted he feared the worst when Rigg hit the floor.

“It probably looked as though it was a penalty and it was one that went for us if I’m being completely honest,” said the 29-year-old striker.

“It was harsh on Carlisle but there was one a bit later on in the game when I was beside Wozza (David Worrall) in the box.

“Their player has pulled him back when he’s gone to hit the ball and I thought that was a penalty too.”

Despite the spot-kick not being awarded, Blues were still able to come out on top to end their two match losing streak.

Corr was also on target for the third game in succession.

And he was delighted to help the Shrimpers get back to winning ways, with the club’s Irish contingent coming to the fore as recalled defender Adam Thompson also helped to secure a clean sheet.

“Us Irish people are fighters so maybe that helped here and hopefully it will for the rest of the season too because we don’t want to be in the play-offs again this season,” said Corr.

“We want to be in the top three so it was important we won this game.

“There was a bit of pressure on us after the losing the last couple of matches so there’s a feeling of relief to have won again and we’re delighted to get the victory.

“We had to be patient but we got the goals we needed in the second half to get the win.

“Now we want to follow this up at AFC Wimbledon tomorrow night in what’s going to be another very difficult game.”
