ADAM Thompson insists Southend United are keen to get their own back on Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow.

The Shrimpers were thrashed 4-1 by the Chairboys at Adams Park in December.

And Thompson admits the manner of the defeat still rankles Blues.

“We definitely feel as though we owe Wycombe one after what happened before,” said the centre-back.

“We certainly won't need to be reminded about it but maybe Wycombe might think they're better than us because of that 4-1 win and because they're also above us in the table.

“But as a club and also as a team I feel as though it's us who are better than them and hopefully we can show that tomorrow.

“It's a big game for us pride wise and because of the league table as well.”

Blues head into the match sitting sixth in the League Two standings, five points behind third placed Wycombe.

That makes this weekend's encounter extremely important but Thompson does not believe it will prove pivotal.

“It's a big game because of where we both our in the table but I still think there will be plenty of twists and turns after this match so I don't think it's the be all and end all,” said the 22-year-old.

“But whoever wins this game will have the momentum going in to the final 11 or 10 of the season and we obviously want that to be us.”

Thompson also hopes to be able to secure a third successive clean sheet after forcing his way back in to the starting line-up.

The defender was surprisingly left out of the squad for the 4-2 defeat at Stevenage a fortnight ago.

But he has since been recalled to the team, alongside Luke Prosser, and is desperate to keep his place.

“I'm happy to be back in and to have got two clean sheets in a row but we all know we have to play well to stay in the team,” said Thompson.

“Being left out wasn't nice but you just have to deal with it and wait for another chance which I'm now making sure I try and take.”

With that in mind, Thompson is keen to come out on top tomorrow.

But for that to happen, he feels Blues' supporters will need to remain right behind the team.

“Hopefully the fans can be really positive,” said Thompson.

“It might be a cagey game and with both of the teams being up there it might not be that open.

“Hopefully the fans will understand that and stay behind us because that could be the difference between winning and losing.”

Blues could also have goalkeeper Daniel Bentley available this weekend after he returned to full training yesterday.

Bentley has missed the last two games with a groin problem.
