DAGENHAM & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett felt Southend United were worthy winners at Victoria Road on Saturday.

Daggers went in to the game on the back of two successive wins.

But they were unable to continue the good run of results as Blues bagged a 3-1 win which Burnett felt was fully deserved.

“I’m not making any excuses, Southend were better than us, especially in the second half and deserved the three points,” said Burnett.

“We started well in the first half but then they’ve got a goal deep in stoppage time and it was a very, very good goal to be fair to them.

“However, it was also disappointing for us because I thought it was a foul on (Shamir) Fenelon and the referee has given it the other way which then led to them scoring.

“But you have to deal with that.”

Southend then extended their lead at the start of the second with Barry Corr firing home a penalty.

And Burnett felt that made it almost impossible for his side to get back in to the game.

“When you’re only a goal behind, there’s always a chance to get back in the game, but when you’re two goals down it’s very difficult,” said Burnett.

“The wind certainly had a say in the second half and the goalkeeper, who normally kicks well, found it hard.

“But take nothing away from Southend. They deserved to win.”
