SOUTHEND United's Luke Prosser was knocked unconscious during the Shrimpers’ drab 0-0 draw with Cambridge at Roots Hall this afternoon.
The centre-back was struck full in the face by a powerful Ryan Donaldson free-kick midway through the second half before being stretchered off, wearing a neck brace.
And Shrimpers boss Phil Brown expressed his concern at the final whistle.
“I’ll probably have to go to hospital to visit Luke and it certainly didn’t make for nice viewing,” said Brown.
“After coming off he was having pins and needles down his arms which can be the sign of a spinal injury.
“He took the ball in the face which knocked him out and he landed a little bit awkwardly too.
“We have to treat it with due care and attention and seeing one of your players coming off with his head in a brace is never nice.
“Our thoughts certainly go out to his family because it’s all a bit uncertain but he will get all the support he needs from us.”
