DANIEL Bentley became just the second ever Southend United goalkeeper to secure eight successive home clean sheets with Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Cambridge.

Bentley shut out the visiting U’s with relative ease during a dull goalless draw at Roots Hall.

And the 21-year-old is delighted to have joined Mervyn Cawston as the only Shrimpers shot-stoppers to have gone more than 720 minutes without conceding a goal at their own ground.

“I’m delighted to achieve another clean sheet and to have joined Mervyn Cawston as the only Southend goalkeeper to have done eight in a row is a real honour for me,” said Bentley.

“I can’t really take the credit because it’s a team game and the team’s good defensive record but I am really pleased to have done this.”

However, Bentley has become the first Blues goalkeeper in 34 years to have kept eight home clean sheets in a row and he will now be looking to continue the fine run to equal Cawston's club record run of 10 set during the 1980/81 season.

Bentley had missed Blues’ three last home games with a groin injury but he had kept seven successive clean sheets at Roots Hall before taking on the U’s at the weekend.

Yet, despite securing another shut-out, Bentley was still left feeling disappointed at the end of the game after the Shrimpers were unable to secure a return to winning ways.

“These are the games you want to be winning, especially after the disappointment of the Burton game so we’re all frustrated not to have got the three points,” said the Wickford based Bentley.

“Cambridge came for a point and got it. They are in a bit of a dog-fight at the moment so they wanted to frustrate us, shut up shop and slow the game down.

“They will be happy to have got the point but we’re not because we wanted to get some momentum going again.”

The draw kept the Shrimpers fifth in the League Two standings, five points below the automatic promotion places.

But Bentley is keen to remain upbeat.

“Football is a funny game and you never know what can happen if you suddenly get back to back wins,” he added.
