SOUTHEND United centre-back Luke Prosser could be facing up two weeks on the sidelines with concussion, opening the door for Adam Barrett to return to the starting line-up.

Prosser is struggling with whiplash injuries he sustained when being knocked unconscious during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Cambridge United.

And that could well to lead to Barrett being recalled to the team for just the second time since he returned to Roots Hall in January.

“It’s very unfortunate for Pross and he could be out for around a couple of weeks but that does open for someone else to come in,” said Brown.

“We have a decision to make but Adam Barrett is certainly in my thinking. It’s been very tough for him since he’s come back in, injuring his calf straight away.

“He also had a bit of sickness which stopped him travelling to Burton but he was back in training yesterday and he could be a very important player for us during the run in.

“However, Jerome Binnom-Williams also showed when coming on at the weekend that he can fit into that left hand sided centre-back role so he’s certainly in contention for Saturday’s game at Bury.”

Prosser, who was taken straight to hospital after the draw with Cambridge, looks certain to miss the trip to Gigg Lane.

But Brown is not entirely sure when the defender will be fit enough to return.

“It’s hard to tell with concussion but at it stands Pross definitely won’t play on Saturday,” said the Blues boss.

“He’s suffering from whiplash and will be assessed on a day to day basis by our medical staff.

“There’s a stringent list of questions put together by the PFA and the FA to carefully monitor head injuries and we will be following that with him.

“He’s unable to drive at the moment and it’s a really serious thing which has happened to him so we have to treat him with due care and attention.”

Prosser also looks set to be joined on the sidelines by Kevan Hurst who picked up a hamstring problem against Cambridge.

The winger will receive scan results on the injury today but Brown does not expect him to figure at Bury.

“Hursty has tweaked his hamstring and is definitely a big doubt for the weekend,” said Brown.

“But we will know a lot more about his injury once we get the scan results back today.”
