SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown revealed the Shrimpers’ game being abandoned at Bury on Saturday completed a calamitous two days for his team.

Torrential rain forced Blues’ game at Gigg Lane to be called off after just six minutes.

But, prior to that, Shrimpers’ top goalscorer Barry Corr was involved in a car accident on the A127 before Southend’s team bus also broke down on the way to the ground.

Brown and his players did not arrive at the game until 2.20pm and the Southend boss is still cursing his bad luck.

“It’s just been a tale of disaster for us if I’m honest with one thing going wrong after another,” said Brown.

“Barry Corr was involved in a four car pile up on the A127 on Friday and we were worried about whiplash and him being injured.

“He didn’t come on the coach but we got him here eventually but we were supposed to be training at Bolton at 2pm and we didn’t get there until 4pm.

“After that we went to the hotel but after leaving there to go to the ground the coach broke down and I was just left looking up thinking something is hanging over me at the moment.

“It carried on with the game being called off after just six minutes and it’s certainly been an eventful couple of days for us.”

Blues will now have to head back to Bury for a rearranged game.

But Brown had no complaints about Saturday’s clash being called off.

And he also felt it was the correct decision to have at least tried to get it played.

“Twenty minutes before the game it was fine and we were looking forward to a decent game of football but it started coming down after that,” said Brown.

“The weather was horrendous, it was of monsoon proportions and it just wasn’t shifting but at least we tried to get a spectacle going.

“It was playable before the game and both managers agreed with that.

“But it all changed quickly and there was too much at stake to play in those conditions.

“It was an old fashioned six pointer because both of us are trying to hang onto the coat-tails of the top three, while we are trying to get closer to Bury so it would’ve been too risky to play.”

Despite the postponement, Blues remain fifth in the League Two table but are now 11 points behind the automatic promotion places.
