SOUTHEND United’s first team coach Graham Coughlan is confident Cian Bolger can grab his latest chance to shine.

The Irish centre-back is favourite to replace the injured Adam Thompson at Hartlepool United tomorrow.

And Coughlan, a former defender himself, believes Bolger is capable of impressing alongside Adam Barrett.

“It’s been stop start for Cian so far this season but I thought he acquitted himself really well on Friday when he came on against Mansfield,” said Coughlan.

“He’s a young lad who is learning the game but he’s taking things on board and he gives us an extra few inches at the back and going up the other end too.

“Him playing next to Adam Barrett has the look of a nice partnership because they complement each other well and I also think playing alongside Adam might help Cian too.

“He’s got all the attributes to be a top class centre half and it’s just about him expressing that now.”
