CIAN Bolger and Luke Prosser will battle to replace the injured Adam Thompson in Southend United’s defence at Hartlepool United this afternoon.

Thompson’s shoulder problem, which he sustained during the 2-0 win against Mansfield Town, will be assessed by a surgeon tomorrow when it should become apparent how long the 22-year-old will be out of action.

But, in his absence, Brown must choose between Bolger and Thompson to take on the Monkeyhangers.

“Cian had a point to prove when he came on for Adam against Mansfield and he certainly made it because I thought he was outstanding,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“His first involvement in the game was a good strong header forward against the big, strong kid Mansfield had up top and it was exactly the type of display you want from a number five at the back.

“However, Luke Prosser is now also available again after coming through all the tests after his concussion so he will certainly be in my thoughts.”

Blues have also been boosted by the return of winger David Worrall for this afternoon’s game but Kevan Hurst again misses out with a hamstring injury, with Brown not willing to risk him at this stage.

"I’m being slightly cautious with Kevan because I don’t want him to come back too soon and have him ruled out for the rest of the season,” said Brown.

“We’re taking our time and he should be available for the weekend, just not today.”

Blues head into this afternoon's game sitting fifth in the table, eight points below the automatic promotion places.

But Hartlepool have been in excellent form in recent weeks, winning four of their last five games to work their way off the foot of the table and up to 22nd in the League Two standings.
