DAVID Worrall believes rediscovering his enjoyment for football has been the main reason behind his impressive first season with Southend United.

Worrall’s fine form has been a major reason in the Shrimpers reaching the League Two play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley this Saturday.

And the winger is certain it is down to having a smile back on his face “I’ve just really enjoyed it at Southend and that’s why I think it’s gone well for me,” said Worrall.

“I’ve normally picked up a few injuries at other clubs I’ve been at and I hadn’t really been enjoying it as much.

“But coming here has been great and I’ve been loving every minute of it.

“It’s totally different to any other club I’ve been at.

“The weights are different, we all do yoga and the training is really intense too but I think it all suits me.”

As a result, Worrall has regularly shone for the Shrimpers and he now also wants that to be the case against Wycombe this weekend as he bids to avoid more Wembley heartbreak.

Worrall was part of the Shrewsbury Town side when they suffered a last gasp 1-0 defeat to Gillingham in the League Two play-off final back in 2009.

And Worrall is determined to come out on top this time around.

“I was only a young lad at the time, I got the last 20 minutes and Gillingham scored right at the end,” said the 24-year-old.

“It was very hard to take but Graham Coughlan was playing for Shrewsbury back then too so that’s actually how he knows of me.

“But promotion was the reason why I came to Southend and that is what I want to achieve.

“When I met the gaffer last summer he said he was looking to go up.

“I went through the team and realised there was a good chance it could happen and we can do that on Saturday now so I can’t wait to get out there.”
