JOE Pigott has urged Southend United to focus on winning promotion not playing at Wembley.

The on loan Charlton Athletic striker returned to the starting line-up for the Shrimpers’ successful semi-final second leg against Stevenage.

And he is now desperate to finish off the job by making sure Blues triumph again against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

“This is a game we have to win to get promotion and that’s all that matters, not playing at Wembley,” said Pigott, 21.

“Of course that makes it extra special but I’m not really thinking about if I’m honest.

“I have loads of friends and family coming to the game which of course adds to the occasion but I think some of them are more excited about it all than I am.

“For me it’s just another game and we have to focus on winning it and nothing else.”

Pigott wants to play a part in that happening and is desperate to stay in the side, having started the four games before the second leg against Stevenage on the bench.

But the striker hopes to have done enough to keep his place and he is desperate to end his loan spell on a high.

“I came to Southend to get promotion and we still have a chance to make it happen,” said Pigott, who has scored six goals for the Shrimpers.

“Wycombe are a good team and playing on a nice big pitch like we are I think it should hopefully make for a footballing match.

“However we definitely have enough quality in the team to be able to win the game and I can’t think of a better way for my loan spell to end.”

Pigott would also love to get a goal to help make sure of promotion and he remains confident of hitting the back of the net despite having not scored in his last 10 games.

“I seem to get at least one chance in every game I play and I’m still confident of taking the opportunities that come my way, “said Pigott.

“Hopefully I can get one Saturday because scoring there and winning the match would be a dream come true for me.”
