SOUTHEND United midfielder Ryan Leonard is bidding to complete an unusual double celebration for his family at Wembley this weekend.

Leonard’s father, Dave, was manager of Truro City when they won the FA Vase at the world famous stadium in 2007, beating AFC Totton 3-1 in the final.

And Leonard, who was there watching that day, now wants to sample his own success at Wembley by firing the Shrimpers to victory against Wycombe Wanderers in the League Two play-off final on Saturday.

“My dad was manager of Truro City when Wembley first reopened and they won the FA Vase there so hopefully I can go and emulate him now too by winning there with Southend,” said Leonard.

“I was there that day to see them win and it was great so hopefully now we can go and win our game, especially as that would mean we would get promotion.”

Leonard’s family will now be in the stands watching him at Wembley, And he will also have more supporters on his side, after his home-town club Plymouth Argyle were beaten by Wycombe in their play-off semi-final.

“Now Plymouth are out I think I’ll have a few more people cheering for me in the final,” said the midfielder.

“It’s a long old journey for my friends and family to come up from Plymouth but they will be there to support me which makes it extra special.”

Leonard, who turns 23 on Sunday, played a huge part in the Shrimpers’ semi-final success against Stevenage, firing home a well taken equaliser to get Phil Brown’s side back level in the second leg.

And Brown expects him to be available for the final, after intensive treatment on a tight hamstring.

“Touch wood Lenny will be back in training today because he’s our only real doubt at the moment,” said the Blues chief.

“He’s been to a cryotherapy chamber to speed up the healing process and hopefully that will have done the trick because he’s an important player for us.”
