WORLD Snooker Champion Stuart Bingham hopes he can be Southend United’s lucky charm as the Shrimpers bid to win their own big final.

Bingham saw off Shaun Murphy at the Crucible earlier this month to claim the biggest prize possible in the sport.

And the 39-year-old now hopes Blues can get the breaks they need to secure their own success when they face Wycombe Wanderers in the final of the League Two play-offs on Saturday.

“I had great support from everyone in Southend and Basildon when I was playing so it was nice to show my support for them too now,” said Bingham.

“I went to Roots Hall for the semi-final with Stevenage and it was a great game.

“The nerves were jangling, especially after missing the penalty in the 95th minute but it was brilliant for them to get the win in the end.

“I’ll be going to Wembley now too and hopefully I can be their lucky charm.”

Bingham has played at Wembley Conference and Wembley Arena during his snooker career, while his uncle Billy lined up for Billericay Town at the world famous stadium during the 1970s.

And the Vange-based Bingham has urged the Shrimpers to keep the faith as they bid to beat the Chairboys.

“I think the most important thing in any sport is to keep your belief so that would be my only advice to the team,” said Bingham.

“But Wembley has some good memories for me and my family and hopefully it will for Southend after the weekend too.”
