SOUTHEND United’s legendary left-back Chris Powell will be among those cheering the Shrimpers on at Wembley tomorrow.

Powell, who is now manager of Championship club Huddersfield Town, made 290 appearances for Blues at the start of his playing career in the early Nineties.

And the 45-year-old will be supporting his former side tomorrow as they bid to get back into League One.

“Southend is a club that will always mean a lot to me, I have friends who are still season ticket holders there and I’ll be there to support them myself on Saturday," said Powell.

“I know Wycombe’s manager Gareth Ainsworth, I spoke to him a few times when he first got the job and he’s been terrific for them.

“To have his team in the play-off final just a season after staying up on the last day is a huge achievement.

“But obviously I want Southend to win and I think it should be a good game because both teams like to play the game the right way.”

Powell, who was promoted from the play-offs when playing for West Ham United in 2005, will also be keen to see how Joe Pigott performs in attack for the Shrimpers.

Powell handed the striker his senior debut as manager of Charlton Athletic and he always felt Pigott was one to keep an eye on.

“Joe scored a lot of goals in the youth team at Charlton and also in the under-21s, so I gave him his debut against Oxford in the cup and he scored in that too," said Powell.

“He’s a box player who knows where the ball is going to drop. He still has a lot to learn, but he has a terrific attitude and he needs to be playing games to develop.

“Being on loan at Southend will definitely have helped him and I certainly hope his spell will end in promotion for the club.”
