SOUTHEND United skipper John White was holding back tears when he walked up to be presented with the play-off winning trophy.

The Shrimpers skipper was left delighted by his side's enthralling victory against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

And the right-back felt it was impossible to describe the feeling of getting his hands on the silverware in front of more than 20,000 Blues fans.

"It was an emotional feeling and I was holding back tears as I went up get the trophy but you can't put how that feels into words," said White.

"I didn't want to think about it in the build up to the game in case it didn't happen.

"But it was just incredible and it might not ever happen again so you want to make the most of every single second of being up there."

However, White and his team-mates were just 20 seconds away from losing the tie before Joe Pigott fired home an injury time equaliser.

His late strike took the tie to penalties where the Shrimpers triumphed 7-6, much to the delight of White who was relieved not to have to take a penalty.

"I was starting to worry about taking a penalty, especially as my body was starting to seize up.

"But thankfully Daniel Bentley did wonders for us again.

"Like we normally do we made it difficult for ourselves but we showed real belief and spirit to come out on top again.

"I could barely run to celebrate at the end but it was just an absolutely amazing feeling."
