SOUTHEND United’s youth team chief Ricky Duncan will be a proud man when England’s under 20 team face Morocco in the Toulon Festival this afternoon.

Two of England’s squad members – defender Dominic Iorfa and holding midfielder Isaac Hayden – both came through the ranks at Roots Hall.

And Duncan will be in attendance to watch them today.

“I’m out here on a course and it will be fantastic to see both Dominic and Isaac playing,” said Duncan.

“Dominic came to use when he was about 12 or 13 and left when he was 16 to join Wolves after our FA Youth Cup game with Liverpool and he’s had a fantastic season with them.

“They’re really pleased with his progression and it’s a great to see Isaac involved as well because he’s had a few injuries at Arsenal this season and has done well to come back.”

Iorfa was born in Southend and is the son of former Shrimpers striker, Dominic, who scored once in 17 appearances while with Blues.

He made 22 appearances with Wolves in the Championship this season and was voted the club’s young player of the season.

But Duncan has not been surprised by the defender’s development at Molineux.

“Dominic was always a really athletic lad with good pace and strength so he was one we thought would do well,” said the 50-year-old.

“When he was with us he played more at centre-back but I think he’s been more of a right back with Wolves and he’s been doing really well.”

However, Hayden’s progress with Arsenal has been hindered by an ankle injury.

But Duncan believes the youngster still has the talent to make it at the top.

“Isaac one another one who stood out and he was actually the first player I sold when I came back to Southend 10 years ago,” recalled Duncan.

“Liam Brady gave us a call about him and he’s been there ever since.

“He’s had a few injuries which is a shame but he has talent and if he can stay fit then he has a real chance.”
