SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has confirmed he wants to bring Stephen McLaughlin back to the club on a permanent basis.

The Irish winger ended the season on loan at the Shrimpers from Nottingham Forest, scoring twice in nine games.

But Brown would like the 24-year-old to remain part of his squad in League One next season.

“I would definitely like to try and secure Stephen for next season,” said the Blues boss.

“He has a great left foot and I thought he played a big part for us following his arrival from Nottingham Forest.

“I will definitely be talking to them about Stephen and hopefully we can sort something out.”

McLaughlin is expected to soon hold talks with Forest boss and former Shrimpers striker Dougie Freedman about his future at the City Ground.

The winger also spent time on loan at Notts County during the past season and sources close to the Championship club have indicated that they could allow McLaughlin to leave on a free transfer as long as a sell on clause can be included in any possible deal.
