SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin has been left stunned by Barry Corr’s decision to join Cambridge United on a two year deal.

Corr, who ended last season as the Shrimpers’ top scorer with 16 goals, had been in talks over a new contract at Roots Hall.

And it was actually Echosport who broke news of Corr’s departure to Martin.

“It’s come as news to me that Barry will be leaving and I think it’s the same for everyone else at the club as well,” said the Blues chairman.

“It’s disappointing there wasn’t more communication from him and I’m sure it’s disappointing for the fans as well that he’s left.

“We have a fantastic group of guys at this football club and I really did think Barry was one of them.

“You would’ve expected a phone call to let us know what was happening and to say thank you for his time here.

“Don’t forget we stood by him when he was out injured for 15 months but I guess it goes to show there’s just no loyalty in football anymore.”

Corr was offered a new two year deal to remain with the Shrimpers, following their League Two play-off final victory against Wycombe Wanderers but was not keen to agree to the terms of the contract.

Oxford United and Portsmouth were also keen to bring in the Irishman but he opted to sign for the U’s, meaning he will still be in League Two next season which also shocks Martin.

“I would’ve thought any footballer would want to test themselves at a higher level,” said the Shrimpers supremo.

“But nothing should ever surprise you in football I guess.”

Corr joined Southend on a free transfer in 2010 and scored 63 goals in 183 appearances for the club.
