JOE Pigott would be open to a return to Southend United, if he does not have a future at Charlton Athletic.

The 21-year-old striker ended last season on loan with the Shrimpers, scoring a last gasp equaliser in the play-off success against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

And he would be interested in coming back to Blues if he cannot force his way into the first team at the Addicks.

“I’m obviously resting up at the moment and still looking back on what happened at Wembley with a smile but if I’m not going to figure at Charlton then I would certainly be interested in going back to Southend,” said Pigott.

“I obviously know the manager and the lads but I really don’t know what’s going to happen at this stage and where I will be playing next season.

“I’ll be reporting back to Charlton for the start of pre-season training and I’ll be trying to make an impression there.

“Every footballer wants to play as high as they possibly can and I’m no different.”

Pigott bagged seven goals in 23 appearances during his five month loan stint with the Shrimpers.

And Blues boss Phil Brown has since revealed he would be trying to bring the forward back to Roots Hall as his team attempt to impress in League One.

Southend’s hopes of securing Pigott’s signature were boosted when it was reported the goal-getter was free to leave the Valley.

But Pigott revealed he had not been told that was the case.

“I’ve heard a few rumours and reports but nobody has really said anything to me,” said Pigott.

“The problem I’ve got is that the Charlton manager (Guy Luzon) has never seen me play because I’ve been out on loan but hopefully I’ll be given the chance to change that.”

One of those opportunities could even come in a pre-season friendly at Roots Hall where the Addicks will be playing on at the end of July.

And it is a match Pigott would love to be involved in.

“It would be an interesting one to play in I’m sure,” said Pigott.

“But it would be good to play and hopefully I’ll get that chance.”
