SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown will today meet with Paul Smith to discuss the goalkeeper’s future at the club.
Brown is keen for the 35-year-old to move into a coaching position with the Shrimpers.
But he is not sure whether or not Smith will want to make the switch.
“I’m meeting with Paul today to discuss his future and to see whether or not he would be interesting in doing some coaching with us,” said Brown.
“Paul has done a lot behind the scenes with us and I’m sure Daniel Bentley and Ted Smith would agree with that too.
“That’s why I want to talk to him and see what he thinks.”
However, Brown hinted that the shotstopper, who played just once last season, may depart if he wants to continue his playing career.
“If Paul wants to concentrate on playing then we might have a problem with that happening here,” said Brown.
“I don’t really see us having three goalkeepers in League One and the situation has changed since last summer due to the emergence of Ted Smith.”
Paul Smith joined Blues in August 2012 and has made 47 appearances for the club.
