SOUTHEND United have completed the signing of former Leyton Orient striker David Mooney.

As was first revealed by Echosport, the 30-year-old has agreed a two year deal with Phil Brown’s side.

And Mooney cannot wait to get started with the Shrimpers.

“I want to enjoy my football again,” said the Irishman.

“It was disappointing last season for me and I'm looking forward to getting going again with the new challenge ahead in League One.

“I wanted to get back into League One and the manager is very ambitious and a real character.

“I think we have the players here to do well and I can’t wait to get started.”

Mooney spent the last four seasons with Leyton Orient, scoring 51 goals in 170 games.

He has also played for Stockport County, Norwich City, Charlton Athletic and Colchester United.

And Mooney could soon be joined at Roots Hall by another ex U’s attacker Anthony Wordsworth.

“I certainly wouldn’t rule out Anthony coming in for a medical in the next couple of days,” said Brown.

“I’m still very keen to bring him to the football club and I believe he would be another very good signing.”

Brown was also due to hold contract talks with first team coach Graham Coughlan last night and will meet with assistant manager Dave Penney when the former Doncaster Rovers boss returns from his holiday.

However, the Shrimpers chief did hold further discussions with centre-back Adam Thompson yesterday.

But a new contract has yet to be agreed.

“We discussed a short term contract with Adam to get him over the injury but there are still one or two things to talk about so the talks are ongoing,” said Brown.

“I’m also still talking to Gary Deegan and while we’re further apart financially with him I’m still hopeful of getting something done.”
