SOUTHEND United have flown out to the south coast of Spain for the start of their pre-season training.

Manager Phil Brown and his squad flew out from Southend Airport yesterday morning.

And the Blues boss believes the trip will be of huge benefit.

“We did something similar last year and the facilities we're going to be using this time are of even greater quality so it's going to be great,” said Brown.

“We're out there for five days and it will allow us to get plenty of good work done.

“Being together is also great for team spirit and it will be brilliant for David Mooney and Anthony Wordsworth to settle in.

“We will be working hard and preparing the lads for the first game which is a behind closed doors match at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.”

Brown revealed former Leicester City centre-back Kieran Kennedy and ex Manchester United trainee Richard Eckersley – who can play either right-back or left-back – are the only trialists making the trip.

And both Gary Deegan and Adam Thompson have also headed to Spain, despite not having yet signed new contracts with the Shrimpers.

“There are still one or two things to sort with Gary but he's come away with us and hopefully we can sort out a deal with him,” said Brown.

“Adam is also making the trip to continue his rehabilitation work from the dislocated shoulder he suffered towards the end of last season and he's another one we want to get signed up.”
