DAVID Mooney hopes a switch to Southend United can help him start to enjoy his football again.

The 30-year-old striker, who has a signed a two year deal with the Shrimpers, was relegated from League One with Leyton Orient last season.

And he now hopes to be able to bounce back from that disappointment with Blues.

“Last season was very disappointing and frustrating but I can’t do anything about it now, it’s a closed book and a start of a new chapter with Southend which will hopefully go well,” said Mooney.

“I want to get back to enjoying my football again because that wasn’t the case last season.

“But I’ve still managed to score goals in the last couple of seasons and I obviously want that to continue here.”

Mooney spent four seasons with Orient before making the switch to Southend last week.

And the Irishman, inset, is pleased to be staying in League One.

“Southend getting promotion played a big part in me wanting to come here and I’m glad to still be playing at this level,” said Mooney.

“I was also really impressed by the manager when I spoke to him. He really sold the club to me, he is really ambitious to do well and he’s a great character who I’m looking forward to working with.

“We also have a good squad here with some players I already know, including John White and Ben Coker, so I can’t wait to get started.”

Mooney, who has also played for Reading, Stockport County, Norwich City Charlton Athletic and Colchester United, is now training in Spain with his new team-mates.

And he is confident they can enjoy a successful season in League One.

“I know that the manager here will not leave any stone unturned,” said Mooney.

“We have the players here to do well. They are fit and strong and I know we’re going to be well organised which is half the battle at this level.”
