SOUTHEND United’s under-21 team will take to the field for the first time ever when they take on Great Wakering Rovers tonight.

Shrimpers boss Phil Brown has decided to give the club’s promising young players a run-out at Burroughs Park.

And he believes the clash will be a significant step forward for Blues.

“It’s a big moment for the future of this football club with the under-21 team playing for the first time ever,” said Brown.

“We’re all really excited about it and this an excellent opportunity early on in the season for the young players to stand out and show they be considered for the first team.

“It’s a big night and I hope the fans go along to support the team in big numbers.

“I will be there along with eight or nine members of the first team and we will be parading the play-off winning trophy while we’re there so I’m certainly not pouring cold water on this game.”

Highly rated Jason Williams and Jack Bridge will be among those involved against the Ryman Division One North side.

And Brown wants them to follow in the foot-steps of Jack Payne and Ted Smith in proving their worth at Burroughs Park.

“A couple of seasons ago it was Jack Payne’s performance in our game at Wakering which led to him getting a new contract,” said the Blues boss.

“The year after I remember Ted making a fantastic save which really highlighted his ability and hopefully now somebody else can step forward as well.

“The younger lads didn’t come out to Spain with us so this will be my first real chance to see them in action during pre-season and it’s going to be interesting to see who can do well.”
