SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has revealed he enjoyed a positive meeting with transfer target Noel Hunt on Friday.

Brown is keen on bringing the former Reading striker to Roots Hall following the Irishman's release from Ipswich Town.

But the Blues boss believes there is still some way to go before completing any possible deal.

“I don't want to go overboard about it in case we miss out and there is certainly a bit to go as far as Noel is concerned but it was a very positive meeting,” said Brown.

“He is clearly a great guy and Mick McCarthy cannot speak high enough of Noel so I would certainly love to bring him to the football club.

“I think the fact I worked with his brother Stephen at Hull holds us in good stead but it's going to come down to finances.

“I don't want that to come across as us not being able to afford him because the chairman is pushing the boat out for me here and that's great.

“If would could get the deal done then it would take us to the next level in terms of signings quicker than I expected.

“But there's still a bit to go with it all and that's probably the best way to describe it.”

Brown also remains keen on bringing former Brighton & Hove Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith to the club on trial.

However, he has yet to hear back from the forward's agent.

“I still want to bring Craig in to have a look back but I haven't heard back from his agent,” said Brown.

“He said he would get back to me but as things stands right now he hasn't got back in touch.”
