SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown wants four new signings before the start of the League One season.

The Shrimpers boss has completed just two transfers so far this summer.

But the 56-year-old is adamant more fresh faces are needed, especially in attack.

“We have 16 outfield players who I would consider to be in contention to start in League One and that’s not enough,” said Brown.

“I think it’s obvious we need to add to our strike-force because David Mooney and Jason Williams are the only strikers we have on our books.

“If that’s still the case when the season gets underway then we’re going to be in trouble.”

Brown is still keen to add to strike-force by bringing in former Reading front-man Noel Hunt and Charlton Athletic striker Joe Pigott, who ended last season on loan with the Shrimpers.

But Brown is becoming frustrating by a lack of progress in pursuit of the players.

“It’s slow going and if I don’t hear back from Noel Hunt in the 24 hours then I think I’m going to have to move on,” said Brown.

“That’s not me pointing a gun to his head or anything like but we need to get the striking situation sorted.

“We’re still moving things on where Joe Pigott is concerned but I’m going to see if there’s any way of getting it done a bit quicker.”

Blues, who have also lost last season’s top goalscorer Barry Corr to Cambridge United, were forced to play Ryan Leonard out of position as a striker during last Saturday’s pre-season friendly with West Ham United.

The Shrimpers continue their preparations by travelling to Dagenham & Redbridge tomorrow.

And Brown believes it will be another worthwhile warm up game for his side.

“Dagenham are a good side and it’s going to be a good exercise for us going there,” said the 56-year-old.

“It’s still all about fitness and it’s another opportunity for the players to get more minutes under their belts.”
