SOUTHEND United’s David Mooney is keen to end his pre-season schedule in style when he faces his former Leyton Orient side at Roots Hall on Sunday.

The Irish striker spent four years with the O’s before joining Blues this summer.

And the 30-year-old is therefore looking forward to facing the East London outfit this weekend, just two months after his departure from Brisbane Road.

“I look back on my time with Orient with great memories and it’s going to be really good this weekend,” said Mooney.

“It was sad how things ended at Orient but getting released allowed me to join Southend and I’m loving every single second of it here already.

“I’m feeling really good again, I feel like I’ve been here for years not weeks and it would be great if we could end the pre-season friendlies with a result and performance similar to the Charlton one.”

Blues beat the Addicks 2-1 at Roots Hall on Tuesday evening, with Mooney heading the game’s decisive goal.

The striker had previously netted from the penalty spot in a 2-1 defeat at Braintree Town.

And he would love to now also impress against Orient, with his family set to watch him in action for the Shrimpers for the very first time.

“My family haven’t been able to get to a game since I’ve come to Southend so that’s also going to add to the occasion for me,” said Mooney.

“My six-year-old daughter Ava has only ever known me to playing for Orient so it will be strange for her to suddenly see me playing against them.

“But I think it will be a good game as we’re getting closer to the season starting and I obviously want to play well.”

Mooney then aims to take that form into the start of the League One season.

And he believes it is imperative Blues find their best form early on in the campaign.

“The year we came close to winning promotion with Orient we won our first eight games and I think a good start is half the battle,” said Mooney.

“It would be extremely difficult to do something like that again but Bristol City made a great start last season and it keeps you up there challenging for quite some time.

“Hopefully that’s what we can do and for myself personally I want to help that happen by getting back to the form I was showing a couple of years ago when I scored 21 goals.”
