SOUTHEND United have completed the signing of former Reading striker Noel Hunt on a two-year-deal.

The 32-year-old completed a medical with the Shrimpers this morning.

And he will go straight into the squad for Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Leyton Orient at Roots Hall, much to the delight of Blues boss Phil Brown.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have brought Noel to the football club,” said Brown.

“I think it’s been the most long drawn out transfer I’ve ever been involved in and there were times when I didn’t think it was going to happen.

“But it’s all done now and I couldn’t be happier because Noel is a quality player.”

Hunt, who has also played for Ipswich Town and Leeds United, trained with the Shrimpers this morning.

But Brown believes it will take a full week to assess the Irishman’s fitness.

“He’s obviously looked after himself during the summer and he does look like someone who has gone through his own pre-season,” said Brown.

“He’s been missing game time though and I think it will take a full week for us to really know how fit he is.

“However, the plan is for him to play some part against Leyton Orient tomorrow and we just need to keep him on the pitch now.

“It’s a huge signing for the football club and a case of Southend 1 Chicago 0 as well!”
