SOUTHEND United’s Cian Bolger and Kevan Hurst are both back in contention for tomorrow’s clash with Peterborough United at Roots Hall.

Centre-back Bolger has returned to full training yesterday after recovering from a shoulder injury while winger Hurst is available again after his hamstring problem cleared up.

And Shrimpers boss Phil Brown is therefore facing a number of selection headaches.

“Cian Bolger is back already and I just find that phenomenal,” said the Blues boss.

“He popped his shoulder and tore ligaments but he was back in full contact training yesterday.

“It’s amazing what his body’s been through so he’s causing me headaches at centre-back.

“Glen Rea is available as he will travel to Andorra straight after the game to meet up with Republic of Ireland’s under 21 team,

“His debut was a quiet one but he showed a lot of good qualities alongside Adam Barrett so that’s a real selection dilemma and we have Kevan Hurst back now too.”

Hurst missed Blues’ last two games with a hamstring problem but will now be bidding to force his way back into the squad.

However, Myles Weston is away on international debut with Antigua who take on Guatemala in a 2018 World Cup qualifier tonight and substitute goalkeeper Ted Smith is on international duty with England’s under 20 squad.

Paul Smith has therefore been called up into the squad to replace him while striker Jason Williams could also be in contention after scoring a hat-trick for the under 21 team against Gillingham on Wednesday afternoon.

“The window closed just before I went to see the under 21s playing and Jason Williams got a hat-trick which was music to my ears,” said Brown.

“He’s probably been reading the Echo and been thinking hang on a second I’m here, don’t forget me.

“He put a marker down and maybe I don’t need to go and get a striker now.”

Brown will now also be hoping his side can deliver goals against Peterborough as the Shrimpers bid to secure their first victory of the season.

“The signs are moving in the right direction for us,” said the 56-year-old.

“The win is just around the corner but Peterborough will be thinking the same because they’ve had an indifferent start too.

“They’re used to this level but once we get the first win I think there will be a sense of relief and satisfaction and hopefully we can get it tomorrow.”
