DAVE Robertson believes it is a ‘perfect fit’ for him to have become the new under 21 boss at Southend United.

Robertson arrived at Roots Hall to take charge of the Shrimpers youngsters last month just three weeks after being dismissed as manager of Peterborough United.

And Robinson is already relishing the new role.

“It’s a good opportunity for the type of person I am,” said Robertson.

“I enjoy getting out on the grass, working with young players and developing them, so the chance to join Southend was a good one for me.

“I had a number of conversations with the manager and I think it’s a perfect fit to come in, work alongside and support Phil [Brown] in what we’re trying to achieve here.

“I’ve known the academy manager Ricky Duncan for a number of years and I actually set up the academy system at Peterborough so I’ve had plenty of experience working with young players.”

Robertson guided 36 players through the youth system during his 12 year stint at Peterborough and also saw 19 of them win international honours.

Robertson’s record saw him promoted to first team manager.

But his spell in charge was ended by a 2-1 defeat at Southend United in early September.

“It’s funny how things work out,” said Robertson.

“I had a few weeks out and went round to a few clubs but this is a good challenge for me now.

“I don’t look at it as a step down from what I had been doing and I’m just excited to be back in the game doing what I love.”

Robertson now hopes to use his vast experience to help bring more success to the Shrimpers’ youth set-up.

And the 41-year-old, who spent time in the Royal Marines, is also keen to stamp his authority on the side.

“I like my players to play freely and to express themselves,” said Robertson.

“I like creativity like an artist but I also like discipline like a soldier.

“Discipline and the approach are important but you need to have talent as well and we intend to marry those things up to help the group move forward.

“We have 12 players in the squad and I would expect to see a huge number perhaps progressing here at Southend United and who knows, maybe beyond that as well.”
