SOUTHEND United's Jack Payne wants his goalscoring display at Sheffield United to kick start his stuttering season.

The 21-year-old bagged an impressive effort, in just his second league start of the season, to help Blues bag a 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

And the attacking midfielder is now determined to keep on shining for the Shrimpers.

"It's been a frustrating season so far for me but hopefully I can build on this now and keep on doing well," said Payne.

"It's been hard not playing and those who are in the team get the opportunity to get even better because they're involved in more matches.

"But I've worked hard and waited for a chance which has now come my way.

"I would like to think I've done enough to stay in the side and I want to kick on from here and help the team pick up more points."

Payne's first goal of the season came just two minutes after Ryan Leonard's speculative strike had handed the Shrimpers the lead at Bramall Lane.

But the Blades soon hit back with Jose Baxter and Neill Collins levelling things up before half-time.

And Payne was left feeling frustrated his strike had not helped Blues pick up all three points.

"After starting so well it's disappointing that we didn't go on to win the game," said Payne.

"We gave away a couple of sloppy goals and were under quite a bit of pressure in the second half.

"But we were still able to get a point and it was an enjoyable game to be part of."

The share of the spoils also saw the Shrimpers move up to 11th in the League One standings.

But Payne already has his sights set on facing Blackpool at home this weekend as he bids to find his best form at Roots Hall.

"I do probably get more room when we play away but I do enjoy playing at home as well so hopefully I'll be involved on Saturday," said Payne, who has now bagged eight of his last nine goals on the road.

"When I've played at home I've helped the team get some good wins which is what matters most.

"Hopefully I can help us get three points on Saturday now."
